His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, has lauded Cross River State Governor Prince Bassey Otu for his recent decision to upgrade the former School of Nursing and Midwifery to the College of Nursing Sciences. This significant move is aimed at enhancing the quality of nursing education in the state.
During a courtesy visit from members of the college's governing council and management team at his palace, the Obong expressed his gratitude for the governor's commitment to modernizing the institution. “I am delighted with what the College of Nursing Sciences is doing for our young ones. The growth and development of this institution will undoubtedly elevate the nursing profession in our state,” he stated, underscoring the importance of such advancements for the local healthcare landscape.
The Obong also highlighted the college's crucial role in encouraging youth to pursue careers in nursing and midwifery, which he views as vital to the community's overall well-being. His Eminence pledged his unwavering support for the college and announced his intention to participate in the upcoming 2024 matriculation ceremony, signifying a deep commitment to the institution's future.
Dr. Christy Essien, the chairman of the Governing Council, led the delegation, which included the college provost, Mrs. Joy Nelson, and other key management staff. During the visit, Dr. Essien informed the Obong about the college's maiden matriculation ceremony scheduled for 2024, emphasizing the institution's achievements in producing numerous certified nurses and midwives who are now making an impact both in Nigeria and internationally.
Provost Joy Nelson remarked on the importance of the visit, stating, “We were warmly received by His Majesty and had a fruitful discussion. We expressed our gratitude for his continuous support and guidance, which have been instrumental in our success.”
She continued, “We also extended an invitation to His Majesty to join us for our upcoming matriculation ceremony, and we were honored when he graciously accepted. His presence will undoubtedly make the occasion even more memorable for our students, faculty, and staff.”
